Walking into your first Zumba class can feel intimidating — the music is loud, everyone seems to know what they're doing, and you're trying to figure out where your feet go. The good news? Zumba is built on a small set of repeating moves, and once you get comfortable with the basics, the rest falls into place naturally.
1. The Salsa Step
Start with weight on your right foot. Step left foot to the side, tap right foot next to it, then mirror the motion back. Keep your hips loose and let them follow the music. This is the foundation of nearly every Zumba routine you'll encounter.
2. The Merengue March
March in place but exaggerate the hip movement. Each step should feel like you're pushing your hip out to the side. Once it feels natural, add a small forward lean and you'll start moving like the pros.
3. The Cumbia Slide
Cross your right foot over the left and slide it back. Repeat on the other side. The rhythm is slow and confident — perfect for cooling down between high-intensity tracks.
4. The Reggaeton Stomp
Bend your knees slightly and rock from side to side, planting each foot with intention. This move builds leg strength while keeping your heart rate up.
5. The Booty Shake
The crowd favorite. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, soft knees, and let your hips do all the work. Don't overthink it — Zumba is about expression, not perfection.
